A member asked:

What is the life expectency of someone who has severe combined immunodeficiency?

Good with treatment: Without treatment, severe combined immunodeficiency is lethal in infancy. If treated with a bone marrow transplantation or similar immune reconstitution, before severe infections occur, life expectancy is the same as normal individuals. Adults with scid treated in childhood have their own children. Poor organ function as a result of infections leaving scars might limit life expectancy.

Depends: Scid is an absolute medical emergency that needs to be treated as soon as possible. Ideally these children would be screened at birth and scid identified and rapidly sent onto very specialized care. Not all states screen for scid however. Call the idf (www.Primaryimmune.Org) and find out if your state screens for scid and if not how you can help get this vital test added to new borne screening.
