EEEWWWWWWwwww Leech: The need to use leeches and maggots always intrigues me, but that issue may be better addressed by the psychiatrists in our healthtap team! leeches are an effective tool when there is an injury or procedure that results in venous congestion. The leeches (sterile from a medical grade source) can be applied to decongest an edematous area due to venous congestion, thus allowing for a better healing.

Yes: Leech therapy has been around since before modern medicine. Some doctors wil still use this therapy to add in getting blood flow through severed or transplanted body parts. There has been more discussion as of late in using leeches for ischemic limbs with ulcers.

Yes, thankfully.: Because leeches drain blood effectively, efficiently, and nearly painlessly, they are very effective at treating problems where blood has pooled to a dangerous level. Examples: post-operatively, if wound swells with blood, pressure builds and fresh blood can not enter the area, so the area could die. Fda clearance for leeches used to treat this. Research also shows efficacy in pain control.
