Purpura: Purpura is a medical condition due to fragility of the blood vessels under the skin. Sometimes this can be made worse by thin skin due to aging or medications, or by blood thinners such as Aspirin or coumadin (warfarin). This is a fairly common feature. There may be a history of trauma or sometimes will form spontaneously.

This is not normal: More information is needed, . Longstanding pile marks may be due to congenital vascular malformations such as port wine stains whereas trauma related lesions may be associated with a coagulopathy.

Age or blood thinner: The purple marks may represent fine bleeding that occurs under the skin (purpura) from age related changes (senile purpura) or from being on medications which thin the blood ( warfarin, aspirin, Plavix (clopidogrel) etc.). The bleeding can occur from very minor trauma or injury to the skin such as bumping into walls. None the less have it checked to be sure. Hope this helps.
