Does the doctor or anesthesiologist tell you which medicines or vitamins to stop before your surgery?

Yes : The surgeon or the anesthesiologist will discuss with you which medications you should take or discontinue. Usually blood pressure medications should be continued, diabetic medications stopped or lower the dose, and supplements are stopped. Aspirin and NSAID usage needs to be tailored to your condition and surgery. Many herbal supplement may effect bleeding and or anesthetic medications.

Yes: Most anesthesiologists would prefer you to be off all herbal supplements about 7 days before the operation. They will also discuss which medications to sop and/or keep taking.

Pre-Anesthesia: During the Pre-Anesthesia testing appointment the anesthesiologist will help you answer these questions. It is a good idea to bring any documents that describe your health history and your medication list.
