Can genital herpes infect a baby?

Yes: A woman with a history of genital herpes, with or without fresh sores on her genitals, can transmit herpes virus to her baby during delivery. Such an at-risk baby is carefully examined, so that proper anti-viral medications can be started if the baby shows signs of herpes infection.

Yes: This is more likely to happen if mom has a first breakout around the time of delivery & delivers vaginally. Infection rates of around 30% have been cited. Risk drops for recurrent outbreaks & when mom takes suppression meds. Often a c-section delivery is scheduled or done as soon as the water breaks to prevent exposure.
