Are there effective treatments for hiv?

18 doctors weighed in across 4 answers

Yes, but no cure.: Hiv, or human immunodeficiency virus, is the virus that causes aids. While there is still no cure for HIV infection, highly active anti-retroviral therapy (haart) is used to keep the disease from progressing. People who are on haart, typically a combination of different medications, can live essentially normal lives.

Yes: There have been incredible breakthroughs in medical therapy for hiv. First is to confirm the diagnosis; you don't want to take medication unless you have the disease. If confirmed, you should seek immediate evaluation by an infectious disease specialist who specializes in HIV and HIV therapy. Do not be afraid. This is a very treatable disease.

HIV can be treated: Yes, hiv, the human immunodeficiency virus, can be effectively treated. At the present time there is no "cure" for hiv. Like high blood pressure, and diabetes and asthma, HIV cannot be 'cured' but if you take daily medicine, you can live a normal, healthy life. Seek the care of an HIV specialist (an expert in HIV who follows all the newest discoveries in this field).

Yes, but don't stop!: The goal of therapy is to get the virus to an undetectable state while getting the CD4 +t cells as high as possible. Several different combination therapies (aka "triple cocktail")can be used. However, it must be stressed that this is a life-long commitment- once you start, you can't just stop taking the medications on a whim. Otherwise, the virus will become resistant to the drugs you are taking.
