Neither: One med may not necessarily be better than the other. These are both antiviral medications of the same family. Kind of like the antibiotics Amoxicillin and penicillin the both work the same way. Valtrex (valacyclovir) or valcyclovir ends up being converted into zovirax or Acyclovir in your body when metabolized by your kidneys. Valtrex (valacyclovir) may cost more also.

Both work well!: Everyone responds differently to different anti-viral medications! i usually start by prescribing zovirax (acyclovir) and see how a person responds! i often have the patient take 5 capsules a day and also have them apply the ointment to the lesion topically! if that doesn't help, we'll try valtrex!
