What is a way to raise a blood platelet count?

Depends on the cause: There are two main reasons why you may have thrombocytopenia (low platelet). You are either not manufacturing them effectively or they are being consumed somehow. The best way to boost the count is to see a qualified hematologist and get worked up. If they are not being produced effectively, there is a good chance that other types of blood cells aren't being produced well either.

Splenectomy: To add to dr. Sample's excellent answer...A common cause of thrombocytopenia is itp (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) where platelets are deformed by antibodies causing their destruction by the spleen. If all else fails, removal of the spleen can increase the lifespan of these platelets in many of these patients.
