"blood thinning": This is an unfortunate description in medicine which can be misleading. People at risk of clots forming in their blood stream need anti-coagulants to prevent the clots from forming. The blood is not actually "thinned", the medication given makes the blood less likely to clot by partially blocking the clotting mechanism. The medications are called anticoagulents, such as Warfarin or heparin,
