A member asked:

What can cause viral infections in infants?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Viruses: The newborn is fortunate to have temporary immunity to many viral illnesses based on moms lifetime of experiences. This temporary immunity is passed thru the placenta & begins to fade by 3-4 mo. After that point an kids get an average of 5-7 viral respiratory illnesses/yr and 2-3 diarrheal illnesses/yr. Some vaccines (mmr & hep b) are available to prevent some illnesses, but most will self heal.
