GERD: The biggest growing risk for esophageal cancer is acid reflux. Other factors leading to risk would include being african-american, smoking or prior exposures to chemicals such as lye.

Two types: For adenocarcinoma, the main risk factor is acid reflux or gerd. For squamous cell carcinoma, the main risk factors are smoking and alcoholol.

Obesity and GERD: The predominate risk factors for adenocarcinoma of the esophagus are gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd) and obesity. For squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus, smoking and alcohol intake are huge risk factors.

Depends on type: For adenocarcinoma, the risk factors are mainly acid reflux, leading to barrett's metaplasia, and being male. The risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma include smoking, alcohol, radiation exposure, other head and neck cancers, caustic ingestion, a condition called achalasia, eating foods with nitrates, and conditions called chaga's disease and tylosis.
