E coli is bacteria: E coli is the name of a type of bacteria which typically lives in the gut, but can travel anywhere and cause an infection. "regular" e coli from a woman's colon often finds its way forward to the urethra (passage from bladder to outside) and is a common cause of utis in women. Other dangerous strains of e coli (o157-h7) are more commonly found in food sources from contaminated livestock or crops.
