Follow the pain: This really depends on what makes the leg pain thing worse than what makes it better. It could be behind the knee from pressure in the posterior popliteal space. If the pain is worse with walking we could consider vascular on neurologic. If it is in the front it could be shin splints or other compression. If there is knee arthritis this could be a baker's cyst. We need more information.

Varicose veins?: If the ache is most noticeable when you have been on your feet for an especially long time during the day, varicose veins could certainly be one of the possible causes for your symptoms. If you have some very prominent visible veins, it is worth it to see a vein specialist/phlebologist. If you have some visible veins that aren't very prominent, you might want to try compression stockings.
