A member asked:

What causes the development of spongiform encephalopathy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Prions: Prions are small abnormal proteins that can be transmitted by eating certain types of foods which usually contain parts of the central nervous system (i.e. The brain). The prions cause a reaction in the brain of the consumer which affect other normal proteins which leads to brain damage and progressive neuro-degeneration.
