Depends: This is a great question and really depends on the circumstances. Sometimes this is very difficult to tell, and prompts doctors to look for other signs. In breast and liver cancer, multifocal usually means that these are multiple individual cancers that arise due to a "field defect". Your medical oncologist can help you understand your particular case better.
