Various risks: If a person is infected with t. Cruzi during pregnancy, there are risks related to increased risk of miscarriage, preterm birth and neonatal infection which may cause infant death or severe complications. However if there is early diagnosis and treatment the outcome for babies is much better.

About 20% transmit: According to “congenital chagas’ disease in chile: incidence, diagnosis & treatment evaluation by pcr” by dr. Myriam lorca, associated professor of parasitology, biomedical sciences institute, faculty of medicine, university of chile “approximately 80% of infected mothers may not transmit the parasite to the fetus during gestation, and will give birth to a healthy child.” treatment lowers risk.
