What are the chances of randomly getting retinitis pigmentosa?

At birth / later?: Rp is an inherited condition and occurs according to the laws of inheritance. The chances of getting it randomly (that is to say without any being in your ancestry) is low but is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 in 4000. At age 34, if you have no symptoms you are almost certain not to get rp.

Inherited Disease: Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of inherited disorders that cause degeneration of the retina and vision loss. The condition can be inherited in multiple ways and rarely is caused by a new mutation. The most common symptoms are night blindness and gradual loss of peripheral vision. There is currently no proven medical treatment, however retinal implant( argus ii) may help in end-stage rp.
