A member asked:

How does benzocaine function?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Benzocaine : Benzocaine is a commonly used local anesthetic. It is an ester anesthetic that blocks both the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses by decreasing the neuronal membrane's permeability to sodium ions, which results in inhibition of depolarization with resultant blockade of conduction. It basically prevents conduction of the nerve.
