Herding breeds: Most guide dogs are golden retrievers, laborador retrievers and german shepherds. For some reason, the ability to train a guide dog depends upon the serious ability of the dog to chase and retrieve thrown balls. Dogs that pass that test can then be accepted for training which takes about two years.
