Rare: Protopic was felt to be superior to topical steroids for the long term treatment of eczema. Protopic reduces the skin's immune response which decreases the inflammation which is seen in eczema. Protopic (tacrolimus) taken systemically, typically in organ recipients, can increase the risk of certain malignancies. This does not apply to the small amount applied to the skin.

Stinging: The most common side effect associated with the use of Protopic ointment is stinging or burning after application. Ingestion of this medication is associated with suppression of the immune system and cancer, it is used to suppress organ transplant rejection. It is not likely that this would occur with use on the skin, but safety studies are underway.
