what causes the autoimmune disorder called lupus?

2 doctor answers
Dr. Pierre Moeser
Specializes in Rheumatology
Unknown: Genetic, hormonal, immunologic, and environmental factors may play a role but the overall cause of lupus is unknown. The immune system becomes activated and attacks the body itself hence the term autoimmune.
