If a herpes culture/test is negative, how accurate is that result?

Depends on timing: False negatives can occur, especially if the ulcer is cultured too late, after healing has already begun. False negatives are less likely to occur when the culture is taken from an intact vessicle (blister) that has been opened for the purpose of the culture, or from a very fresh ulcer.
