Either ...: ...Cold turkey and let him fuss or try to stop nursing while drowsy, but not yet sleeping. Hold him in this state slowly stretching the time to 20 minutes after stopping. Then put him down. This method often works.

Cold, hard facts: Being nursed is now his sleep association. He has to unlearn it & learn to self-calm to go to sleep. Wean to a cup; he only needs 16-21 oz./day of milk & milk products. Give his dad big props for a consistent bedtime & routine, including toothbrushing, reading & putting him in his own crib drowsy, but awake. It may take a couple of weeks. See aap.Org for tips.
