Live longer: Heart transplantation is reserved for end stage heart failure where the quality of life is poor (patients have symptoms with minimal exertion or at rest) and death is imminent (usually one year survival less than 50%). A new heart gives patients an excellent quality of life and longevity (average person survives ~ 12 years after a transplant, with some surviving close to 20 years).
