Are seizure disorders really serious?

Possible.: For years, docs have reassured epilepsy patients that seizures are relatively benign. While a fall during a seizure may cause injury, the surge of electricity in the brain does no actual damage, patients were told. Evidence suggests that repeated seizures can harm the brain or, in rare cases, even lead to death. Damage to the hippocampus (memory formation) is of concern for uncontrolled seizures.

Yes: Seizures that last a long time and compromise breathing are a serious situation. Seizures can prevent people from working and interfere with their daily living and are therefore serious. Even if a seizure itself is not serious, it is the situation in which they occur, for example walking across the street, down stairs, while swimming, in a boat.
