See ACOG guidelines: Maternal-fetal medicine or OB doctors or nurses spend lot of time looking at fetal heart monitoring tracings to see if there is a regular and normal heart rate, typical variability, absence of decelerations. They might order intermittent monitoring unless high-risk mom or abnormalities that can be associated with fetal problems. Parents should feel free to ask if continuous is needed. See my guide.

And the baby wants ?: Your pregnancy can go just fine for months with babies normal & steady growth supported by a umbilical cord & placenta that will not sustain the added stress of labor. I've seen as many as 3 true knots in the cord, 5 neck wraps & small placentas the size of a poached egg. Continuous hr monitoring allowed each of these problems to be picked up & kid delivered quick.Risky choices can hurt.
