Bacterial meningitis: Acute bacterial meningitis usually presents within 24 hours of the start of infection due to the severity of symptoms. Treatment with antibiotics can rapidly clear the bacterial infection, but neurologic sequelae can persist for days to weeks or longer, and in some cases may be permanent.
