Shin splints: You are experiencing a condition of swelling of the muscle confined in the tibial compartment to the outside of your shin bone. This can occur after repeated trauma such as caused by a prolonged run especially if you are not a condition athlete. This usually will pass, but if the pain is extreme and the skin over this area is tense, you may need evaluation. NSAIDs ahead of the run can help.

No: Not uncommon, but not normal. There are several possible causes, probably the most common is known as a shin splint which is an in inflammatory condition at the orgin of the tibialis muscle on the tibia. Don't hesitate to be seen if it persists.
