Prostaglandins : Prostaglandins in semen can cause cramping like a period is trying to start. They are the same chemicals that are produced as the uterine lining breaks down and cause menstrual cramps. The bigger question is why you didn't have a period for a year and there are many possible answers. A full history and testing is necessary in order to answer that. Hope this helps.
