Does anyone know about tmd temporomandibular disorders?

TMD: Temporomandibular disorders, or tmd, are a broad range of problems that can occur with the temporomandibular joint, or tmj. They can manifest as pain in the jaw or ear, headaches, jaw joint clicking, popping or grating, locking of the jaw closed or open, and changes in the occlusion, or bite. They can usually be managed by a soft, non-chewing diet, moist heat and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories.

Anatomy vs symptoms: When i explain tmj/tmd to my patients, i tell them that everyone has TMJ (unless some type of mutation, cancer or accident.) TMJ is the anatomy of the jaw joints- (t) temporal bone on upper maxilla; (m) mandible- lower jaw; (j) joints- where the two meet in a complex of tendons, ligaments, etc. Tmd are the symptoms exhibited by someone who has a problem with the TMJ complex.

Yes: There are many dentists who have the skills to diagnose and treat tmd. Make sure the dentist can diagnose the specific problem and not just start treating you. A different diagnosis requires a specific treatment and tmd is not a diagnosis. For example treating a muscle problem is different than treating a joint problem.
