Common...: During any period of illness, there is an increase in systemic inflammation (blood vessels dilate to help mobilize cells to fight and also for nutrition) which causes the release of proteins (such as cachectin) which raise body temperature and suppress appetite. Depending on the duration of the illness, it is not uncommon to lose several pounds of body weight.
