Not just an MD...: From the id society of america: your id physician has 9-10 years of specialized ed and training. •4 yrs of medical school •3 yrs training as a doctor of internal medicine •2-3 yrs specialized training in infectious diseases most id specialists who treat patients also are board certified by the american board of internal medicine., passing two tough exams in i.M. And i.D.

Alot of studying: You graduate medical school then do 3 years of internal medicine residency then you have to pass the abim internal medicine certification exam then you do 2 years of infectiious disease fellowship then you have to pass the abim infectious disease board examination to be a board certified infectious disease specialist.
