Yes: If the emphysema is causing wheezing, the theophylline medication used primarily in asthmatics might be helpful. Also Prednisone tablets are used if the wheezing is severe. Medication delivered in an inhaler is preferable because medication is delivered right to the tissue where the problem is.

Yes: The best medications for emphysema, or copd, are inhaled; however, there is a newly approved oral medication called Daliresp (roflumilast) that has been shown to decrease the number of COPD flares. This won't work when you are wheezing or short of breath, but it should reduce the number of flares you have by about 15%. Talk to your doctor to see if this is a good option for you.
