Bilirubin: Red blood cells have a limited lifespan. When they are recycled, the contents, mostly hemoglobin, are degraded by the body. One of the products of this breakdown is bilirubin, which is normally excreted in the bile. If this process is defective, or blocked, bilirubin increases in the blood and a person may become jaundiced.
