What tells our brain that our skin is itchy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Physiology: Itching is low level pain. There are tiny unmyelinated nerves in our skin which sense irritation, and electro-chemical signals are transmitted to the spinal cord, where awareness travels up the spinothalamic tract to the thalamus in the brain, and thence to cortex where conscious awareness ensues.
