Many things: the most common one of which is continuing to drink - "nipping & sipping" as they say in AA. Recovery is more than just abstinence of alcohol, and people needing recovery have to change many aspects of their own personalities, their coping strategies, how they get along with others, as well as improve their emotional and psychological health. Their families ALSO need to recover &that may be cause
