Yes: Finasteride, which is a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor, blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for prostate gland growth over time. This is why it is used to help control symptoms of an enlarged prostate, by shrinking it slowly. It also helps to prevent hair loss by DHT as well, and Propecia is simply a smaller dose of finasteride for this purpose.

Finasteride for AGA: Finasteride may help you keep the hair you have if your condition is caused by androgenetic alopecia or male/female pattern hair loss. For men, finasteride is highly effective since DHT (the hair killing hormone) production is blocked. In women, it's more complicated. Only some women are androgen-sensitive meaning that DHT may be causing hair loss. We perform a HairDX genetic test to check that.
