Nucleic acid test: A rapid HIV test may become positive in about 12 weeks, but a negative result would not rule out HIV infection. At 12 weeks or so, you may wish to get a HIV nucleic acid test that would rule out HIV if it is negative. You may wish to see your doctor as soon as possible for prophylactic treatment, if the exposure was recent.
