Viral symptoms: These symptoms are commonly associated with viral illness, such as influenza (the flu). Many types of viruses cause these symptoms. If there is prolonged fever over 101 (more than 4 days), severe pain, shortness of breath, or severe dizziness, then medical care should be sought. Most of the time these symptoms begin to improve within 5-7 days. Acetaminophen, rest and fluids can help.

Virus vs bacteria: Most common cause of sort throat, congestion, chills & body ache is a viral infection which won't respond to antibiotics. This time of year, influenza is a very common virus for which you can mitigate infection by getting immunized. Strep throat (caused by bacteria) is treated w/antibiotics. Sorry to hear that: You need to call your Doctor so you can be examined to determine if you have a viral or bacterial infection, as the bacterial may require an antibiotic prescription. Best wishes, get well soon.

Rest, drink fluids: Try gargling with warm salt water 4 times a day. Take Tylenol (acetaminophen) and/or Ibuprofen as needed for fever, chills, body aches, or other discomfort. Drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest. If a sore throat continues for more than 3 days, a test for Strep throat should be done. Strep throat left untreated for more than 7 days can result in serious consequences.

Time to rest now: Sounds like your body has been on overdrive, and needs to recover. That's best done by hydrating well, keeping warm, resting, taking vitamin C capsules or zinc lozenges to combat any virus that may be causing the cold to linger. If this doesn't help, it's time to see your doctor soon!
