A member asked:

What will happen to a late stage alcoholic if he stops drinking suddenly?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Seizures, DT's: In very heavy drinkers, especially those who have already done damage to their bodies with alcohol, the sudden cessation of alcohol can result in a severe alcohol withdrawal syndrome, where pulse and blood pressure can reach unsafe levels, plus vomiting, diarrhea and severe anxiety and tremor. Seizures and DTs, which may be lethal, can also occur. Cessation should be done in a medical setting.
