Beaver fever!: Giardia is a parasite found in fresh water. It's necessary to filter fresh water from streams/lakes as well as to purify it to prevent infection from this and other bugs. Although it is called "beaver fever," it can be found anywhere in the US. My daughter & I got it from a swimming pool in South Florida, because rain water had raised the water level & it bypassed the filters and diluted chlorine
