Apnea: Central and obstructive apnea cause obstruction. When the respiratory drive ceases this is central. This can be due to neurologic or cardiac etiologies. Obstructive apnea is the result of the tongue or throat "closing" resulting in the cessation of airflow. A polysomnogram (sleep study) may be indicated. See your physician.

Cheyne-Stokes: This is abnormal and needs medical attention. Maybe heart or brain related. When you hyperventilate, you blow off excess C02. and at some point your brain/blood vessel receptors will sense that the balance of C02 and Oxygen in the body is not right anymore. Then breathing will stop for a period of time (apnea) as an attempt to correct the imbalance. If this occurs frequently it can be dangerous.
