Depo provera (medroxyprogesterone): Depo provera (medroxyprogesterone) frequently causes irregular bleeding before it causes you to stop having periods. The fishy vaginal odor on the other hand is a classic symptom of bacterial vaginosis. See your doctor for a definitive diagnosis and treatment. Best wishes.

Bacterial vaginosis: A fishy vaginal odor is most commonly due to an infection referred to as bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is very common. It is caused by bacteria that live in the vagina normally. Anything that disrupts the natural environment of the vagina can cause the bacteria to overgrow causing bacterial vaginosis. Frequent spotting is not an uncommon side effect of Depo-provera.

Depo: Abnormal bleeding, bleeding everyday to no bleeding at all, is a side effect of progesterone only contraceptives such as depo. The bleeding pattern you describe can be entirely normal on depo.

Infection: is a possibility with the fishy odor so see your doctor and be checked. Some women get spotting n the Depo-Provera shot but not a fishy odor.
