Levator muscle: what you describe sounds like levator muscle syndrome or proctalgia fugax. very alarming and intense, but lasts usually less than 20 minutes. sometimes wakes a patient from a sound sleep and can break one into a cold sweat. But totally harmless. just like a charley-horse, but in the butt muscles.
