It's hormones: The hormone progesterone is elevated before your period and remains elevated if you conceive, which is why premenstrual symptoms and early pregnancy symptoms are similar. Based on symptoms alone you really cannot tell if you are pregnant before you miss your period, but home pregnancy tests are readily available and quite accurate.
