A 37-year-old member asked:
why do schizophrenics have an awkward walk?
2 doctor answers • 2 doctors weighed in

Dr. Ed Friedlander answered
Pathology 44 years experience
Disease & meds: Schizophrenia is caused at least in part by loss of certain brain cells. Even before medications were introduced, an abnormal walk was sometimes described. The medications may produce extrapyramidal reactions that cause the distinctive "shuffle". It is one more thing that makes the disease difficult for patient and caregiver.

What exactly happens during a shuttle walk test?

Dr. Aaron Milstone answered

Distance walking: There are different tests to measure endurance: a six minute walk test is the best distance walked in meters per unit time. This is usually done in a straight line/circular tracks may be used. An incremental shuttle walk involves walking between two cones. You walk as long as you can until breathlessness. The number of shuttles (laps between the cones) is noted; a shuttle = 10 meters.

Why do I hyperventilate when I walk fast?

Dr. Albert Pizzo answered
Family Medicine 60 years experience
Hyperventilate: There are several possibilities. If you mean by hyperventilating you are short of breath with effort of walking fast then it indicates that you may not be getting enough oxygen to your heart. This could be a pulmonary problem or a cardiac problem. You must call your doctor to report this and be examined to find the cause and then properly treated. Do not postpone== this could be serious.

If you fall down a flight of stairs, can you become paralyzed or lose your ability to walk?
2 doctor answers • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. Michael Bolesta answered

Depends: Yes, it is possible. It depends on many things like age, weight, physical condition, how you land, how far (how many flights or steps). It also depends on the size of the channel for your spinal cord and nerves (varies from person to person, and can be narrowed by degeneration, aging, arthritis). If you have a condition that affects balance, take extra precautions to reduce the risk of falls.
