Several possibilities: Spotting only at the time of the anticipated period can still mark the beginning of a new cycle. Spotting at the time of the anticipated period can also mean that the previous cycle was delayed and that the spotting actually represents ovulation bleeding. A pregnancy test two weeks after the spotting will show if intercourse around the time of the spotting resulted in pregnancy.
