Often caused by shoe: This is often due to shoes that are too tight--especially heels. Get shoes that are wider at the tip, that do not put pressure on your toes.

Arthritis/bone spur: The middle joint of the big toe can develop arthritis and spurs and then the end of the toe starts to deviate towards the 2nd toe. I have also seen a strong family genetic tendency with this condition. Wearing tight fitting heels can cause this problem too. The callus is from the bones twisting and losing the padding in the area.

Sounds like: You have a hallux interphalangeus. Part of it is genetics....the toe can be straightened. (This is a surgery but not a very big one)
