Migraine variant: Severe stabbing frightening pain about the eye. They last only seconds and are often found in people who have migraine headaches as well. No one knows what causes them. They cause no harm beyond the brief pain and sense of fear they induce. For confirmation, contact your doctor to discuss your specific situation.

Cluster headache: also called Ice Pick is the most painful of all the primary headache disorders. Because of the intense pain, cluster patients often pace the floor or bang their heads during headache episodes while rubbing or holding the painful site in any attempt to distract themselves from the pain. They are agitated and restless in contrast to a migraineur who prefers to lie down, usually in a darkened room.

Ice pick HAs: Ice pick headaches are very brief, very painful headaches that occur without warning. They feel like an intense stabbing feeling. They last for seconds. They can occur rarely or very frequently. They may sometimes be treated with indomethacin or melatonin. It is not clear what causes them- but it may have something to do with aberrant nerve signalling, as with migraines and other headaches.
