About 24 hours: You should try to take your birth control once every 24 hours. If you pass the 24 hour mark, then you should take two on the following day when you remember. If you miss more than 2, you should avoid intercourse or use condoms

Several hours are ok: but if you forget to take it in the evening and realize that in the morning, take your pill then, but continue secondary contraception for the rest of the cycle. Other factors that affect absorption are food and other meds. If you are not in a committed relationship, then condom protection is ideal for prevention of infection as well.
